About The Image

In these images Ambrogi works to relate the essence of a moment in rhythmic movement. Each of these images is a moment in a greater choreographed dance; while working with the dancers, Ambrogi designed the dance steps to reveal key moments where a singular photograph could relate the greater essence of movement, rhythm and momentum. Here the concept of the “decisive moment,” though key, is instead capturing a moment for how it contextualizes what came before and after it. In addition to the strategic decisions revolving around the choreography and capture of the images, Ambrogi further enhances the viewer’s predisposition to examine the flow of form first through deliberate decisions regarding the harsh shadows as they obscure the faces and create secondary forms upon the human body. As the face of each subject is obscured, there is a depersonalization that occurs, further enhancing this relationship between the viewer and subject. This forces the viewer to relate to the dancers first as object, focusing on the emphasis of rhythm and movement, and then secondarily as people, thus preventing these images from becoming portraits of dancers.
